A lot of people found an iPad, Android tablet, or smart phone under their tree. The primary appeal of these devices is all of the apps that are available. Along with all the game, news and self help apps, there are a few apps that can be very useful when a driver faces a roadside emergency.

As part of the National Drunk & Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention month, a lot of state highway patrol and local law enforcement agencies will be joining together this holiday season in the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign to remove drunk and drugged drivers from America's roads. Drunk and drugged driving is especially prevalent during the holidays; leading to a tragic holiday season for many American families. During the month of December, 2009, 753 people were killed in crashes that involved drivers or motorcycle riders with blood alcohol concentrations of .08 grams per deciliter or higher.
Effectiveness Of In-Vehicle Monitoring Systems For Teen Drivers

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted an interesting experiment in 2009 that tested the effectiveness of various in-vehicle monitoring systems on teen drivers. The study monitored the driving habits of 84 teen drivers with different types of in-vehicle technology to determine which ones had the greatest effect on both the teen drivers and their parents.

At least two teens in the US and one in Canada died recently after swerving to avoid hitting an animal in the middle of the road and losing control of their vehicles. An ongoing problem that teen drivers face is how to control a car once it leaves the road. So many teens are killed this way because, once they feel the car leave the road, they instinctively turn the wheel sharply to return to the road, often causing the car to skid sideways and flip. This instinctual act is known as "over-correcting" and it can be very dangerous.

Child Passenger Safety Week is coming up September 18 - 24 and there are a few issues to be aware of as we think about how to best protect the most precious cargo of all. A small but interesting study by the Yale School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics revealed that large number of children are unbuckling themselves from their child safety seat while the car is in motion, making their risk of injury in a crash up to three and a half times greater. What is remarkable is that some of those children who unbuckle themselves are as young as 12 months old.
Florida Ranks High Among The Deadliest Cities In America For Drivers

A recently published article by CNBC listed the 15 most dangerous cities for driving in the US. Using the "most recent motor vehicle crash data available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System and General Estimates System", the article's authors looked at cities with a population of 150,000 or more and ranked the cities based on the greatest number of vehicular deaths. The results were somewhat surprising but they also seemed to support other studies conducted over the last couple of years.
Highway Deaths are Expense

The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta has produced a study showing the cost of highway deaths in the United States and the figures are very high. The study looked crash data for 2005 and determined that the total cost from highway crash deaths in the United States for that year was $41 billion. The study found that more than half of the highway deaths in the US occur in ten states; California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas.

Drunk driving is a terrible reality that exists in today's roads, even with legislation, year after year, it seems that this continues to haunt motorist, any time of the year. That may change --- if the human element can't be corrected, some people are hoping that the cars of tomorrow become the cure themselves. There is currently legislation pending in Congress, one which aims to support research for the anti-drunk-driving technology for tomorrow's cars to be a reality.
